Papers: Jones set for debut

07/10/2011 09:30
Phil Jones in action for England Under-21s
John Cross in The Daily Mirror writes...
England set for double gambleFabio Capello is set to take a big double gamble on his England line-up in Montengero. Capello is set to go for Manchester United's Phil Jones at right-back to counter-act dangerman Mirko Vucinic. The Mirror has already revealed Capello is also leaning towards giving Fulham striker Bobby Zamora his first start alongside Wayne Rooney. "I've got some ideas, but I need to sleep on them tonight to decide who will play alongside Rooney and who will play right-back," said the Italian. Tottenham's Kyle Walker impressed in a training match this week, while Everton star Phil Jagielka has also played at right-back, although struggled in that position against France last year. Capello rates youngster Jones highly and is set to give him his senior England debut here on Friday night. The boss also wants a target-man to hold the ball up for counter-attacks, which is why a formation employing Zamora up front and Ashley Young and Theo Walcott on the flanks has come into his thoughts.
Stuart Pearce is considering recalling Danny Welbeck for the England Under-21s for Monday's Euro 2013 qualifier in Norway. Injuries to Nathan Delfouneso and Martyn Waghorn in the 3-0 win against Iceland have left Pearce short on options in attack and he told The Sun: "I will have to speak to Fabio [Capello] and one or two others. We will have to see how the dust settles and get an understanding of the situation."
Meanwhile, former United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron is set to retire later this month, according to The Daily Express. The cultured playmaker is set to hang up his boots following Estudiantes' clash with Racing Club.

International round-up

07/10/2011 20:00, Report by Adam Marshall

United's representatives in Euro 2012 action were certainly heavily involved as England clinched a place at the finals with a 2-2 draw in Montenegro.

Ashley Young opened the scoring but the headlines will be dominated by Wayne Rooney's second-half sending off. Phil Jones made his debut and looked like he'd been playing right-back for his country all his life. Inside two minutes he burst past a couple of defenders to force a nervous palm over from Mladen Bozovic.
Rooney fed Theo Walcott to centre for Young to head in from close range and the United duo set up Darren Bent for the second, with Young crossing unselfishly from the left for a simple tap-in by his former Aston Villa team-mate.
Jones' enterprising play marked him out as a target for some rough treatment but he survived a penalty scare when tackling Stevan Jovetic inside the box. Young went off on the hour mark and appeared to put an ice-pack on his knee and, after Rooney just failed to connect with a deflected cross from Jones, there was more bad news when Rooney kicked out at Miodrag Dzudovic. Referee Wolfgang Stark flashed a red card and the United No10 will be suspended for a minimum of one game during the finals next year.

"Saya kira kita semua sadar pentingnya pertandingan nanti.

Bola.net - Striker Manchester United Wayne Rooney sedang dirundung masalah.

Reds must be up for Liverpool

United's last three games at Anfield:
6/3/2011 - Liverpool 3 United 1
25/10/2009 - Liverpool 2 United 0
13/9/2008 - Liverpool 2 United 1
Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex has challenged his United stars to match Liverpool's desire at Anfield in the champions' next Barclays Premier League outing.
The boss is upset that the Merseysiders have managed to outfight and outmanoeuvre his team in recent seasons during three consecutive defeats in front of The Kop.
Recognising the importance of the fixture to the Liverpool fans, he admits that, while the bigger picture concerns retaining the title, it always hurts to lose to our fierce rivals.
"We’ve been poor there of late," Sir Alex conceded in his exclusive interview with Inside United. "Our record hasn’t been great. On a couple of occasions we’ve been outfought by them, which has been disappointing.
"The atmosphere always plays a part. Of course, every time we go there it’s as if it’s the biggest game of the century. But we need to be better than we have been in recent seasons, and this team can do that."
When asked why he feels the Reds have struggled, since winning 1-0 twice at Anfield in 2007, the boss replied: "I think it’s related to the rivalry between the clubs. It’s an important contest that’s been going on for a long time. But even when Liverpool were in their pomp – in the 1980s – United would regularly beat them there.
"If you look at what was happening then, Liverpool were winning league titles but United were winning the matches between us and them. It’s been the other way around in the last few years. Anfield’s a tough place to go – the supporters make a fantastic noise and you really have to work hard to handle that and cope with it.
"My thinking, though, is that I’d rather be winning the league come May than worry too much about dropping three points at Anfield.

Valencia: I'll play anywhere (manutd.com)

"My personal goals this season are to win the Premier League and Champions League, and simply to play and bring joy to the fans."
– Antonio Valencia
Antonio Valencia
Antonio Valencia's most effective work for Reds may be done on the wing, but he's more than willing to play at right-back for the good of the team.
The Ecuadorian has been employed in defence several times already this season to cover for injuries, most recently in last weekend's 2-0 home win over Norwich.
And besides the lapse that almost allowed Anthony Pilkington to open the scoring for the Canaries, Valencia has performed admirably in his temporary role, combining defensive strength and speed with a willingness to get forward and support the forwards.
"I’ve played at right-back a few times and I’ve enjoyed the position," he told United's official Spanish website. "I respect regular players in that position as they pick up quite a few knocks.
"But I have also played back on the wing this season and I’m happy anywhere on the field. I hope to be ready and to play well when the boss calls me."
While the long-term plan is not for Valencia to stay at full-back, Sir Alex says he "wouldn't have any concerns" about fielding the 26-year-old there again.
"There's a natural instinct in him to help out and defend," the Reds boss told Inside United. "Of course, we know all about Antonio's qualities as an attacker, but he's so quick and so powerful that he's also suited to a full-back role.
"He's incredibly difficult to beat if you're trying to get around him. We also see him as an option in the centre of midfield. He's very disciplined and able to carry out any instruction we give him."
The good form of Ashley Young and Nani at the start of the campaign has assuaged any concerns Sir Alex may have had about taking Valencia off the wing.
